What is Terrazzo?
Terrazzo is a special type of agglomerate flooring that is treated similarly to marble when cleaned and maintained. This popular and often expensive type of hard surface is a composite material that is poured in place or precast. The makeup typically consists of chips of:
- Other suitable materials
This mixture is poured with a binder. The terrazzo is then cured, ground and polished to create a beautiful, smooth surface. Natural stone is porous which means that all natural stone surfaces should be properly sealed and maintained so they shine beautifully for years to come. The sealer will fill the pores and will ensure that spills are repelled and easy to completely wipe away without staining.
How is Terrazzo Properly Maintained?
Because terrazzo is a tough surface, it does not need protection from wear. Instead, it needs protection from stains. A water based impregnator or a solvent-based impregnator should be applied after honing and/or polishing. These sealers are absorbed into the stone and ensure all pores are sealed. Though sealed, the terrazzo surface still needs to be properly maintained. Terrazzo floors should only be cleaned with a neutral pH cleaner. It is important to avoid all-purpose cleaners or soaps that contain water soluble, inorganic, or harmful crystallizing salts or acids. Keep in mind that terrazzo should never be cleaned at a high pressure, such as above 800 PSI.
For routine cleaning, a non-treated dry dust mop is the best option. Sand, dirt and other debris can cause damage to a natural stone surface because of their abrasiveness. That is why it is a good idea to place carpet runners inside and outside any exterior entrances to minimize the amount of debris available to scratch the terrazzo floor.
Because terrazzo is porous, it can be easily stained and etched by acids. This means that if any fruit juice, carbonated beverages, urine or other acids come into contact with your terrazzo, it should be cleaned immediately before it is allowed to etch into the surface. This simply involves wiping up the acid spill immediately with wet cloth. If you have the misfortune of not wiping it up in time and the surfaced is etched, it may require polishing to be removed.
